From March 6 to April 4, Foil Gallery presents Until It Becomes Clear, a new exhibition by Vancouver-based artist Zoe Winters featuring a series of paintings and ceramic works centered on the idea of quiet guidance.
Across the exhibition, Winters introduces gentle companion figures that slowly emerge from landscape, light, and material. These presences are not loud or imposing. Instead, they reveal themselves gradually, appearing through softened forms, diffused color, and layered surfaces that reward patient looking.
Mountains recur throughout the work as grounding forms. For Winters, they function both as shelter and as spirit. Rendered through shifting tones and softened edges, these landscapes carry emotional weight shaped more by light and atmosphere than by narrative.
Color plays a central role in this language. Rather than strong contrasts, Winters works with subtle transitions where boundaries dissolve and forms fade in and out of view. The effect mirrors the way emotions move through the body: slowly, quietly, and often without clear edges.
Working across oil painting and ceramics, Winters creates figures that feel less like symbols and more like companions. They appear as kind presences that inhabit the work gently, offering a sense of warmth and reassurance.
Raised in the Pacific Northwest and influenced by the surrounding mountains and forests, Winters approaches landscape as something alive. Her practice also draws from Shinto philosophy, particularly the belief that spirits inhabit the natural world. Within this perspective, the landscape is not simply a setting but a living presence.
Through a patient and sensitive approach to material, Until It Becomes Clear invites viewers into spaces of calm and reflection. In a world that often feels chaotic and uncertain, Winters’ work proposes gentleness as a form of resilience and reminds us that moments of stillness can offer their own kind of guidance.
