032c Issue #49
“YOU HAVE TO EMBRACE THE TRUTH, DIFFICULT AS IT MAY BE, THAT THE ART THAT RESULTED FROM THAT FRICTION IS POSITIVE.”
- Robert Gordon, author of It Came From Memphis
The 032c Issue #49 dossier is dedicated to the influence of Memphis, Tennessee, on rap as we know it. PHILLIP PYLE speaks to DJ PAUL of THREE 6 MAFIA, DJ SPANISH FLY, LA CHAT, SHAWTY PIMP, and TOMMY WRIGHT III at the northern point of the Mississippi Delta, where photographer NEVA WIREKO captures the city beyond Elvis’ Graceland and shopping at Bass Pro in a pyramidal mall. (Though we have those things too.)
SKRILLEX opens up to ECCO2K in his first formal interview in a decade, with photos by NOAH DILLON and styling by PERI ROSENZWEIG. FLORENTINA HOLZINGER shows JUERGEN TELLER and DOVILE DRIZYTE around the Volksbühne in Berlin before making a literal splash at the Venice Biennale, and SHANE ANDERSON chats to the artist about pimps and kabuki theater. ARTHUR JAFA talks sophistication and emotional resonance with KELSEY LU, shot by COLLIER SCHORR and styled by BECKY AKINYODE in the composer/musician’s own Brooklyn apartment. CARSTEN HÖLLER is back in 032c alongside texts by DANIEL BIRNBAUM and HARRIET SHEPHERD. Teller actually haunts the whole magazine via original portraits of VIVIENNE WESTWOOD and her partner ANDREAS KRONTHALER — who speaks to SVEN MICHEALSEN about his late wife’s legacy — and ZAHA HADID, whose lesser known first building inspired MAHFUZ SULTAN to write a beautiful letter to his most beloved. CASSIDY GEORGE speaks to JACK MILLS and JO EVENDON about SPACE JUNK, the world’s first magazine dedicated to traveling through the interstellar unknown — a journey that would be incomplete without crater surfing and abandoned telescopes. PIERLUIGI MACOR and FRANKA ROSA MARIA KLAPROTH shoot a totally unsolicited (but welcome) youthful ode to ZURICH, and EVA HERZIGOVÁ frolics in Turin for RETO SCHMID and ANASTASIA BARBIERI.

A beyond-cool look at the world of high-end audio design for passionate collectors, obsessive audiophiles, and design fans
At a time when sales of vinyl records have hit a 25-year high, and analog technologies are providing the kind of extraordinary audio experiences that our increasingly digital world has started to remove, Hi-Fi is essential reading. This unique book explores just how, when, and why the world fell in love with the look, feel, and sound of top-of-the-line audio equipment.
Hi-Fi traces this fascinating evolution from the 1950s to today (and tomorrow), taking readers right up to the current renaissance of all things analog and the emergence of cutting-edge designs for die-hard audiophiles.

A comprehensive, irreverent guide to the inner workings of provocative art collective MSCHF
Made by MSCHF is a survey of the work of Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF, known for their eclectic projects that critique the very areas of popular culture they inhabit. Ranging from a line of designer handbags only visible under a microscope to an anime dating game that helps players generate a functional tax return, MSCHF’s works are incisive, often viral, and always instilled with their unique brand of subversive humor.
Featuring never-before-seen imagery, this book presents case studies that explore twelve of MSCHF’s projects in depth, providing readers with a blueprint of how their works are developed from ideation to release. Written by two of the collective’s cofounders, the book features an additional six thematic essays and an archive of every MSCHF artwork to date, together revealing the experimental group’s range and evolution.
Projects include: Big Red Boot, a pair of cartoonishly large rubber boots; Jesus Shoes, their designer-branded sneakers filled with holy water; ATM Leaderboard, an ATM installed at Art Basel Miami Beach that ranked users by bank balance; and Severed Spots, in which they cut out spots from Damien Hirst prints and sold them as individual art works.

The in-depth story of one of the world’s most innovative and influential design companies
In the recent history of contemporary design and architecture, no company has had more influence than Vitra. From the 1950s to the present day, Vitra has worked with succeeding generations of designers – from Ray and Charles Eames to Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, to Ron Arad, Jasper Morrison, and Virgil Abloh. With its forward-thinking approach, Vitra has defined and shaped the way that we live and work.
Written by Deyan Sudjic, Vitra: The Anatomy of a Design Company, tells the story of the three generations behind Vitra. Driven by a sense of cultural and social mission, Vitra has had a major influence on every aspect of contemporary design, from architecture to graphics, photography, product design, and the landscape.
It has shaped our understanding of such major figures as Jean Prouvé and Verner Panton. It has encouraged designers at the start of their careers including Jasper Morrison and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. It has safeguarded the archives of such key figures as Luis Barragan and Alexander Girard, and built one of the world’s most important design museums.
The book also features inserts written by design consultant and writer Karen Stein, as well as a photographic essay by acclaimed architectural photographer Iwan Baan.
Spanning more than 450 pages and over 400 illustrations, this substantial volume covers Vitra’s working relationship with designers, the rich architectural heritage of the Vitra Campus, with buildings by Tadao Ando, Herzog & de Meuron, and Alvaro Siza. It provides an essential account of contemporary design history, offers a unique insight into the role of design in business, and documents the nature of a design process that results in successful products.

A renewed examination of Jeffrey Deitch’s pivotal exhibition
Originally exhibited in 1992, Jeffrey Deitch’s groundbreaking exhibition Post Human brought together the work of thirty-six young artists interested in new frontiers of body and identity transformation. The prescient exhibition, which traveled to five international venues, introduced the art world to posthumanism - how the human body continues to merge with and diverge from technology. Both the show and it catalogue, which featured a unique visual essay and innovative design, helped set the agenda for art discourse in the 1990s.
More than thirty years later, Deitch revitalized Post Human at his Los Angeles gallery, bringing the themes of the original back to the present. The show’s 2024 iteration presented several key figures who participated in the original exhibition in dialogue with emerging contemporary artists whose boundary-pushing work explores how these themes, particularly recent forms of technology such as AI, have evolved over the course of the twenty-first century.
This timely publication revisits artworks from both iterations of the show. Readers will discover color photography of the featured works, along with Deitch’s iconic visual essay from the original catalogue and text contributions from contemporary philosopher Rosi Braidotti and critic Philippa Snow. Together, they form a printed testament to the show’s indelible impact and Deitch’s everlasting influence on the art world.
Featured artists include: Isabelle Albuquerque, Matthew Barney, Ivana Bašić, Frank Benson, Ashley Bickerton, Maurizio Cattelan, Chris Cunningham, John Currin, Alex Da Corte, Olivia Erlanger, Jana Euler, Rachel Feinstein, Urs Fischer, Pippa Garner, Robert Gober, Hugh Hayden, Damien Hirst, Tishan Hsu, Pierre Huyghe, Anne Imhof, Alex Israel, Arthur Jafa, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Mike Kelley, Josh Kline, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Sam McKinniss, Mariko Mori, Takashi Murakami, Wangechi Mutu, Cady Noland, Charles Ray, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Hajime Sorayama, Anna Uddenberg, Cajsa von Zeipel, Jeff Wall, Jordan Wolfson, and Anicka Yi.

Vantage Point is a collaborative publication between American artist Daniel Everett and Swedish artist Mårten Lange.
The project started as a conversation in 2016 at an exhibition for Daniel’s book “Throughout the Universe in Perpetuity” (Études, 2015) during the ‘One Thousand Books’ Art Book Festival at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. Mårten was in attendance and instantly recognized one of Daniel’s images. It turned out that he had taken the exact same image from the exact same place/vantage point that Daniel had, just a short time apart in Tokyo. This amazing coincidence prompted the two to begin working together to compile more images from their individual trips to Japan to be shown together in a book. In 2020 FOAM published an excerpt from the project in issue #56 and this book is the full compilation of images.
